Srinagar: At least 6 Pakistan-supported terrorists were killed by security forces in two encounters at separate places in Jammu and Kashmir today.
While 5 terrorists were eliminated in an intense encounter that spread over 2 days in a village in Kulgam district of Kashmir, one terrorist was gunned down in Budhal area of Rajouri district of Jammu.
The gunbattle in Samnu village in Kulgam began yesterday afternoon after a joint team of police, army and CRPF launched a search operation following specific input about presence of terrorists there, police said.
As the searches were underway, the joint team came under fire from hiding terrorists and it was retaliated effectively, the police said.
The ensuing encounter went on till late night before firing stopped even as tight security cordon continued.
This morning, as the day broke, the search operation and cross-firing resumed with more vigour, officials said.
The gunfight left 5 terrorists dead and resulted in the recovery of a large quantity of weapons and ammunition.
“Five terrorists neutralized by Kulgam Police, Army, and CRPF. Incriminating materials recovered. Operation in final stage, ” Kashmir Zone Police posted on X.
The Army, in its social media post, said a joint operation was launched yesterday and the Samnu area was condoned and search conducted, which resulted in a fire fight.
“Five terrorists have been eliminated along with recovery of 04xAK rifles, 01xPistol & other war-like stores,” it added.
The identity of the terrorists or their affiliation was not clear immediately.
Meanwhile, another encounter took place in Behrote village of Budhal in Rajouri district, bordering PoJK, today.
At least one terrorist was killed in this gunfight, officials said, adding the operation was still continuing.
Two days back, 2 terrorists, including a top commander Bashir Ahmed Malik, were killed near Line of Control (LoC) with Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) in Uri sector of Baramulla district.
Malik, who was active in terrorism for over 3 decades, lately handled pushing of terrorists across the LoC from PoK.
According to the Indian Army, Malik was an important cog in Pakistan-enabled cross-border terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir.
