9 killed in fire at TN cracker factory

New Delhi (NVI): At least nine people were killed and around 30 have been injured after a fire broke out at a private fireworks factory near Sattur in Virudhunagar district of Tamil Nadu today.

The incident happened at around 1:30 pm and soon after the fire, 10 fire tenders from various locations rushed to the spot to douse the blaze in the factory at Acchankulam village, according to the police.

The injured had been shifted to a nearest hospital, where the conditions of many is said to be serious.

Reportedly, the fire incident happened due to friction while handling chemicals in the factory, while the rescue operation is still underway.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed grief over the incident and announced Rs 2 lakh ex-gratia each for the family of those killed in the fire, his office said. He also announced Rs 50,000 for those injured.
