New Delhi (NVI): The government has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 50 lakh for port employees/workers in the event of loss of life due to COVID-19.
In a statement today, the Ministry of Shipping said that it has decided that all the “Major Ports may grant compensation/Ex-Gratia in the event of loss of life due to COVID-19 to the dependent members/legal heirs of the port employees.”

The amount of compensation applies to all Port employees including Contract Labourers employed directly by the port as well as Other Contractual Labourers.
the monetary compensation has been declared to cover the risk of life due to COVID-19 contamination while discharging the Port related duty, the ministry said.
“Port Chairman is the competent authority for the settling claims/disbursement of the compensation/Ex-Gratia and verifying authority for the cause of death from COVID-19. This compensation is applicable only for the pandemic of COVID-19 and shall be in force up to30.09.2020, subject to review thereafter,” it added.
