Covid-19 cases in India climb to 81,970, death toll at 2,649

New Delhi (NVI): The total number of coronavirus cases in India has risen to 81,970 and fatalities from the virus have gone up to 2,649, according to the Union Health Ministry.

In the last 24 hours, 3,967 new coronavirus cases reported in the country.

In Maharashtra, the Covid-19 cases climbed to 27,524, followed by Tamil Nadu that has 9,674 cases and Gujarat with 9,591 cases so far.

The state of Maharashtra has also reported the highest number of deaths, as many as 1,019, which is followed by Gujarat (586) and Madhya Pradesh (237), according to the Health Ministry data.

At least 8,470 people in the national capital have been infected with coronavirus.

The other worst affected states are Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, ministry said.

Meanwhile, the total number of samples tested for the virus stood at 19,47,041 at last count.

Apart from this, the Maharashtra government is most likely to extend the lockdown in the state till May 31 even as the Centre is yet to make an announcement of extension.

At least 27,919 patients have been cured of the virus or discharged.
