Srinagar (NVI): Two militants were killed in an encounter with security forces in the wee hours today at south Kashmir’s Kulgam district, police said.

A police official said that acting on a specific lead, joint teams of forces including Police, Army and the CRPF laid a siege in Wanpora village of Qaimoh in Kulgam district late last night.

“Intense searches were conducted and when a suspected house was zeroed in, the militants present inside opened fire which was retaliated effectively. After establishing contact with the militants, firing stopped for many hours, but cordon ring was strengthened to ensure militants don’t flee,” he said, wishing not to be named.

He added that there was again an exchange of fire between militants and security forces and at almost an hour before the dawn, two unidentified militants were killed. A police spokesman in a statement also said that two unidentified militants were killed in Kulgam gunfight and that the operation was on.

Meanwhile, the authorities have snapped the mobile internet services on all platforms in Kulgam district as a precautionary measure to prevent any law and order situation.

Pertinently, the security agencies had launched a massive manhunt to track down the module behind the ‘car bomb’ that was detected and destroyed at Ayegund village of Rajpora, Pulwama, on Thursday.

The suicide bomber, whom police identified as Hidayatullah Malik, affiliated with Hizbul Mujahideen, had left behind the car laden with 45 kilograms of explosives at Ayegund village after jumping two nakas (check posts).

However, a massive manhunt has been launched to track down Malik and to catch him alive to unravel the entire plot.
