India’s COVID tally near 17 lakh-mark; death toll at 36,511

New Delhi (NVI): The number of coronavirus cases in India reached 16,95,988 after the country reported the largest single-day spike of 57,117 fresh cases in the last 24 hours, Union Health Ministry said.

In addition to this, this is the second consecutive day when India recorded more than 55,000 cases in a single day.

Meanwhile, the country’s death toll stands at 36,511 with 764 new fatalities being reported during this period.

So far, 10,94,374 patients have recovered all over the country. With this, the recovery rate rose to 64.54 percent.

In worst-hit Maharashtra the coronavirus tally reaches 4,22,118, followed by Tamil Nadu and Delhi.

The other worst affected states are, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh Gujarat and West Bengal.

In terms of fatalities, Maharashtra tops the tally with 14,995 deaths, ministry said.

The death toll in the national capital surged to 3,936 while another 1,20,815 patients have recovered so far, healthy ministry data shows

According to Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the total number of COVID-19 samples tested up to 31st July is 1,93,58,659 including 5,25,689 samples tested yesterday.

Meanwhile, the human trial of India’s first coronavirus vaccine ‘Covaxin’ has started in Uttar Pradesh today. Rana Hospital and Trauma Centre in the state was one of the 12 institutes selected by ICMR for clinical human trials.
