Raigad bldg collapse: 10 dead, 78 rescued

New Delhi (NVI): The death toll from the collapse of a multi-storey building in a residential area of Mahad in Maharashtra’s Raigad district rose to 10, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) officials said today.

So far, 78 people have been rescued from the debris and rescue operations continued to remove those trapped.

The local administration, including the police and fire brigade, were carrying out search and rescue operation in the town. Therefore, three teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were deployed to the site of the accident, to join rescue operations conducted by the local police and fire brigade.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah had earlier directed the Director-General (DG), NDRF to provide all possible assistance for rescue operations at the incident site.

Meanwhile, the Raigad Police today registered a case under Sections 304, 304 A, 337, 338 and 34, against five persons.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today expressed grief over the building collapse incident and prayed for the speedy recovery of the people injured.

“Saddened by the building collapse in Mahad, Raigad in Maharashtra. My thoughts are with the families of those who lost their dear ones. I pray the injured recover soon. Local authorities and NDRF teams are at the site of the tragedy, providing all possible assistance: PM,” Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) tweeted.
