Three terrorists, woman killed; CRPF officer injured in Srinagar encounter

Srinagar (NVI): Three unidentified terrorists and a woman were killed in an encounter that broke out early this morning between security forces and terrorists in Batamaloo area of Srinagar, officials said.

A senior police official said that three terrorists were killed in an encounter at Batamaloo area of Srinagar. Batamaloo area is just two kilometers away from Civil Secretariat and the city center, Lal Chowk.

Acting on a tip off, the official said that police and CRPF launched a cordon in Batamaloo area in the wee hours. “When forces zeroed in on the suspected spot, the hiding terrorists opened fire triggering a gunbattle,” he said, adding that after heavy exchange of fire three terrorists were killed.

He, however, said that a woman aged 45 years, was also killed in the gunfight after she was caught in the cross fire, while a CRPF deputy commandant sustained injuries.

The slain woman was identified as Kousar Jan of Batamaloo. “She was taken to SMHS hospital where doctors declared her brought dead,” the official said.

He said that the injured deputy commandant of CRPF was shifted to Army’s 92 base hospital in Srinagar.

A police official said that the firing has stopped and the search operation is underway in the area.
