New Delhi (NVI): A massive explosion in a building near Maskan Chowrangi in Karachi’s Gulshan-i-Iqbal area today killed at least 5 people and injured 20 others, according to media reports.

The explosion was reported on the upper floor of the multi-storey residential building in Gulshan-i-Iqbal, according to Geo News.

All the injured were shifted to a nearby hospital where the condition of 11 people is said to be critical. A team of police and rangers also reached the spot soon after the incident and launched a rescue operation.

However, the nature of the blast has not been ascertained yet but the impact of the explosion was so severe that windowpanes of the nearby building were also shattered.

According to the police officials, the blast may have occurred due to a gas cylinder, but clarified that the Bomb Disposal Squad is investigating the cause of incident.

The first two floors of the building have been severely damaged which has weakened the foundations of the building, due to which authorities are facing difficulty in rescuing people stuck on other floors of the building, as per the reports.

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah took notice of the explosion and sought a detailed report of the incident from Karachi commissioner.

In a tweet, CM House in Urdu wrote, Murad Ali Shah has instructed officials to provide treatment to the injured and expressed his sadness over the loss of lives. He has also directed provincial minister Saeed Ghani to visit the blast site.
