New Delhi (NVI): The air pollution levels in the national capital have further spiked and reached to ‘severe’ category today.
This was mostly due to slow speed of air, which led to the accumulation of pollutants in the atmosphere. Also, stubble burning in Punjab and Haryana and neighbouring regions.
According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the air quality index (AQI) value in the Patparganj area was 404, 408 in Anand Vihar, 447 in Bawana, and 411 in Wazirpur, all four areas were found to be in the ‘severe’ category.
Earlier yesterday, air quality in Delhi-Gurgaon and other parts of NCR remained in the ‘very poor’ category. At some places it had already reached ‘severe’ levels yesterday itself.
The average AQI for the day settled at 395. It was 297 on Wednesday, 312 on Tuesday, 353 on Monday.
However, an increase in surface wind speed and better ventilation conditions are likely to improve the situation in air by Saturday, the air quality monitoring agency, SAFAR said.
Meanwhile, to tackle the rising air pollution, the ordinance released by the Ministry of Law and Justice yesterday, the Environment Pollution (Prevention and Control) Authority (EPCA) has been dissolved and replaced by a commission comprising over 20 members.
