New Delhi (NVI): In the wake of cyclone ‘Nivar’, the government of Puducherry today imposed Section 144 of Criminal Procedure Code in the Union Territory.
Puducherry’s district magistrate Purva Garg said the order shall come into force from 9 pm on November 24 and will remain in effect till 6 am on November 26 in the entire Puducherry region.
The order reads, “With a view to prevent danger to human life and safety do hereby prohibit the presence or movement of one or more persons in public places in the entire Puducherry region and closure of all shops and establishments from November 24 to 26, subject to further revision.”
Only essential services like milk booth, fuel bunk, pharmacies and health services are allowed to continue, it added.
This order shall not apply to agencies or officials of the government involved in the enforcement of law and order and cyclone duty.
However, the ‘Nivar’ cyclone is expected to cross the coasts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry and make landfall between Mamallapuram and Karaikal on November 25 evening, as a severe cyclonic storm with a wind speed of 100-110 kmph gusting to 120kmph.
