New Delhi (NVI): The severe cyclonic storm Nivar weakened into a cyclonic storm over coastal Tamil Nadu and it is set to further weaken into a deep depression, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

“Severe cyclonic storm Nivar weakened into a cyclonic storm over north coastal Tamil Nadu. The cyclonic storm Nivar would continue to move northwestwards and weaken further into a deep depression during next 06 hours and into a depression by subsequent 06 hours,” IMD tweeted.

Furthermore, heavy rains battered south-coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema districts this afternoon, affecting and leaving hundreds homeless in the state.

At least 3 people were killed due to very severe cyclonic storm, which made landfall near Puducherry in the early hours of Thursday, bringing heavy rains to the union territory and neighbouring Tamil Nadu.

The cyclonic storm crossed the coast near Puducherry, triggering heavy winds and torrential rainfall activity in the neighbouring areas. It brought very heavy rainfall in Puducherry (237 mm), Tamil Nadu’s Cuddalore town (237 mm), and state capital Chennai late last night.

More than two lakh people were evacuated to safety in the coastal states that had been bracing for the cyclone – the fifth-strongest category on India’s scale of seven storm types.

Meanwhile, Puducherry and coastal districts of Tamil Nadu including Cuddalore and Nagapattinam, continue to receive rain and experience heavy winds.

Hundreds of trees were uprooted across the state, with the municipal corporation swinging into action to clear them from affected areas.

The Met Department has predicted that fairly widespread to widespread rainfall/thunderstorm activity very likely over coastal and north interior Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal, south coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema, and southeast Telangana throughout Thursday.

The weather department has also sounded a yellow alert in Bengaluru Urban and Rural, Kolar, Chikkaballapur, Tumakuru, Mandya and Ramanagara districts of Karnataka for November 26.

Around 1,200 National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel have been stationed in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and neighbouring Andhra Pradesh as well.

Nivar is the second cyclone to have developed in the Bay of Bengal this year after Cyclone Amphan wreaked havoc in West Bengal in May after developing into a ‘super cyclonic storm’.
