Coronavirus cases surpass 72.2 mn globally; death toll tops 16 lakh

New Delhi (NVI): More than 72.2 million people around the world have been confirmed to have the coronavirus, while the death toll has crossed 16,12,000, according to the Johns Hopkins University tally. Over 47.2 million patients have recovered from the deadly disease globally.

The number of coronavirus infections in the US have surpassed 16.2 million while the number of fatalities due to the deadly contagion have crossed 2,99,000.

Brazil’s coronavirus cases have crossed the 69 lakh-mark and stands at 6,901,952 while the number of deaths have surged past 1,81,000 in the country.

South Korea ordered schools to close from Tuesday in the capital Seoul and surrounding areas as it battles its worst outbreak of novel coronavirus since the pandemic began, surpassing the previous peak in February.

The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Germany increased by 16,362 to 1,337,078. The reported death toll rose by 188 to 21,975, the tally showed.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister of Eswatini, Africa’s last absolute monarchy, Ambrose Dlamini, died in a South African hospital on Sunday after contracting coronavirus.

The Dutch government will decide on stricter measures to fight the coronavirus outbreak in the Netherlands on Monday, as the country reported the biggest rise in infections in more than six weeks.
