Coronavirus cases near 80 million globally

New Delhi (NVI): More than 79.3 million people around the world have been confirmed to have the coronavirus, while the death toll has crossed 17,41,000, according to the Johns Hopkins University tally. Over 44.6 million patients have recovered from the deadly disease globally.

The number of coronavirus infections in the US have surpassed 18.6 million, while the number of fatalities caused due to the deadly contagion have exceeded 3,29,000 in the country.

Brazil’s coronavirus cases have crossed the 74 lakh-mark and stands at 7,423,945 while the number of deaths have surged past 1,89,000 in the country.

Meanwhile, more than 6,00,000 people in the United Kingdom have received the first dose of the Pfizer/BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine, according to a statement released Thursday by the Department of Health and Social Care.

Lebanon reported at least 2,708 new cases of Covid-19 in the past 24 hours, which is the highest number of daily infections recorded since the beginning of the pandemic.

Furthermore, on Christmas Eve, Italy surpassed 2 million coronavirus cases. The country reported at least 18,040 new cases bringing the total to 2,009,317, according to the health ministry.

Brazil announced a ban on all flights to and from the UK late Wednesday, as well as the temporary closure of land and sea borders to foreigners.
