Riyadh (NVI): India is well on track to become Tuberculosis-free by 2025, almost five years before the global target of 2030, Prime Minister Narendra Modi told the Future Investment Initiative Forum (FII) here on October 29.

Addressing the forum Modi said, “Whatever we are doing in India will strengthen global initiatives too. Take for instance our aim to end TB in 2025, before the global target of 2030.”

“When India succeeds, the world will be a healthier place,” he added.

He further said, “My aim is to empower the poorest of the poor and ensure they lead a life of dignity. I am always thinking- how can India contribute to global good.”

Tuberculosis (TB), an airborne disease, is a severe threat to health, globally. Therefore, the world is seeking to end TB with proper vaccination, treatment and rich diet.

The latest  World Health Organization (WHO) report says that the number of new cases of TB has been declining steadily in recent years. In 2018, the reduction in the number of TB deaths was seen as around 1.5 million people died from TB in 2018, down from 1.6 million in 2017.

In India, every year approximately 2,20,000 deaths caused by Tuberculosis have been reported.

WHO had declared India as the highest TB burden country in 2011, as around 2.2 million cases of TB were recorded from India out of a global incidence of 9.6 million cases.

However, according to the recent report of WHO, India has registered around 26.9 lakh incidents of tuberculosis in 2018 and observed a decline of 50,000 patients compared to 2017.
