Army deploys choppers, medical teams for rescue ops in U’khand

New Delhi (NVI): As a massive avalanche wreaked havoc in Joshimath area of Uttarakhand’s Chamoli, the Indian Army deployed two Cheetah helicopters, medical teams and additional troops to support NDRF and ITBP for the stranded, especially trapped labourers at two power projects in the area.

“Indian Army has deployed choppers and troops for supporting Uttarakhand government and NDRF to tackle the flood. Military station near Rishikesh actively involved in the coordination of rescue and relief operations with local administration. Army headquarters are monitoring the situation,” the Army said in a statement.

The Army has deployed two columns from Joshimath and two columns from Auli in the affected area while another two columns were kept on standby.

Engineering Task Force with two JCBs was deployed to assist ITBP and NDRF in clearing slush and debris in Tapovan area.

Apart from that, a medical Column was deployed with two ambulances to help and rescue the injured.

In addition to this, 60 persons of NDRF were moved with 5 ton load from Hindon to Jolly Grant Airport in IAF C130 aircraft.

One more C130 aircraft and one AN 32 was kept ready at Hindon for additional NDRF teams, the Army said in a statement

Three IAF Mi-17 aircraft were positioned at Jolly Grant airport to airlift NDRF teams to Joshimath, it said. Moreover, 16 personnel from MARCOS teams at New Delhi and 40 at Mumbai were ready for deployment.

A field hospital was also kept ready for receiving casualties.
