New Delhi (NVI): More than 106.1 million people around the world have been confirmed to have the coronavirus, while the death toll has crossed 2,316,000, according to the Johns Hopkins University tally. Over 59.1 million patients have recovered from the deadly disease globally.
The number of coronavirus infections in the US have surpassed 27 million, while the number of fatalities caused due to the deadly contagion have exceeded 4,63,000 in the country.
Brazil’s coronavirus cases have crossed the 9.5 million-mark and stands at 9,524,640 while the number of deaths have surged past 2,31,000.
Meanwhile, South Korea reported the lowest daily number of new coronavirus cases since late November as the government slightly eased social distancing restrictions in the face of growing criticism from businesses impacted by the rules.
The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) reported 289 additional cases as of midnight Sunday, with the daily tally falling below 300 for the first time since November 23.
Mexico’s health ministry reported 414 new confirmed deaths from Covid-19, bringing the total to 166,200.
Furthermore, China reported 14 new mainland Covid-19 cases on February 7, official data showed on Monday, up slightly from a day earlier. All new cases originated from overseas.
In another development, South Africa will suspend use of AstraZeneca’s Covid-19 shot in its vaccination programme after data showed it gave minimal protection against mild to moderate infection caused by the country’s dominant coronavirus variant.
