New Delhi (NVI): A letter circulating on social media claiming that the Central Government is asking for a registration fee to set up towers across the country under the Digital India Wi-Fi network initiative.

The fake letter also claims that in return of it, rent and permanent jobs will be provided to people

Refuting the claims, the Fact Check Unit of the Press Information Bureau (PIB) clarified that no letter has been issued by the Central Government regarding setting up of towers under Digital India Wi-Fi Network initiative.

“In a letter, it is claimed that towers are being erected under the Digital India Wi-Fi network on payment of registration fee by the central government and in lieu of this, rent and permanent jobs will also be provided.

#PIBFactCheck: This claim is Fake. This letter has not been issued by the Central Government,” PIB fact check tweeted in Hindi.

Notably, the Digital India initiative aims at building the country into an economy that would center on internet services to connect the rural and urban India. The latest initiative on the campaign is to launch free WiFi services in 2500 cities.

The PIB launched this fact-checking unit in December last year, to curb such misinformation and viral fake news related to government’s schemes and policies that are circulated on social media platforms.
