New Delhi (NVI): The Nepal Supreme Court today quashed Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s House dissolution order while deciding to reinstate the House of Representatives that was dissolved in December 20 last year.
The Nepal Supreme Court also ordered to summon the House within 13 days, as per local media reports.
The Nepal SC has deemed Prime Minister Oli’s move to dissolve the House an unconstitutional move, thereby overturning the decision, reports The Himalayan Times.
The Constitutional bench comprising five members deemed the decision of the government as “void”. With the court’s verdict today, the House of the Representatives has now been reinstated, the newspaper reported.
In line with the top court’s verdict, the Nepal government will have to summon a session of the House within 13 days.
As many as 13 writ petitions were filed at the Nepal SC against Oli-government’s move, calling it unconstitutional. The court had earlier today summoned all the writ petitioners for the final verdict, the newspaper reported.
In December last year, Nepal President Bidya Devi Bhandari had ratified the proposal of the Cabinet to dissolve the Parliament, and announced countywide elections between April 30 and May 10.
Oli’s administration had recommended the dissolution in December, days after he faced backlash over an executive order.
The Nepal prime minister was reportedly under pressure to withdraw an ordinance related to the Constitutional Council Act that he had issued on December 15. The president endorsed the ordinance on the same day.
