India records 16,488 new COVID cases, tally tops 11.07 mn

New Delhi (NVI): India registered 16,488 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of cases to 1,10,79,979, according to Union Health Ministry data.

113 new COVID-19 fatalities have been reported across the country, taking the death toll to 1,56,938.

However, the daily new coronavirus cases and fatalities are showing a upward slide in India.

Currently, a total of 1,06,78,048 patients have been cured an recovered across the country, while the active cases remained above 1.59 lakh mark and stands at 1,59,590.

In worst-affected Maharashtra, the COVID-19 cases increased to 21,38,154 followed by Kerala with 10,52,357 and Karnataka with 9,50,207 positive cases. The other worst hit states include Andhra Pradesh, (8,89,681), Tamil Nadu (8,50,577), Delhi (6,38,849) and Uttar Pradesh (6,03,350).

In another development, over 1.42 crore (1,42,42,547) healthcare and frontline workers have been vaccinated against COVID-19 since the beginning of vaccination drive in India, the Health Ministry data shows.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) data, more than 21.54 crore samples tested for COVID-19 up to February 26. Of these, 7,73,981 samples were tested yesterday.

Apart from that, the Health Ministry yesterday informed that there will be no COVID vaccination exercise across the country on Saturday and Sunday as CoWin App will be updating from Co-Win 1.0 to Co-Win 2.0.
