India reports 15,510 new COVID-19 cases, 106 deaths in last 24 hours

New Delhi (NVI): With 15,510 new coronavirus infections being reported in the last 24 hours, the overall tally has climber to 11,112,241, the Union Health Ministry confirmed today.

The death count climbed to 1,57,157 with the novel coronavirus virus claiming 106 lives during this period, the data showed. The COVID-19 case fatality rate stood at 1.42 per cent.

Currently, more than 1.07 crore patients have been cured and recovered across the country and the total number of recoveries stand at 10,786,457. The recovery rate now stands at 97.17 per cent.

Meanwhile, there are 1,68,627 active cases of coronavirus infection in the country, a level that was last seen at the end of January.

Maharashtra remains the worst-affected state with 21,55,070 COVID-19 cases followed by Kerala with 10,59,403 and Karnataka with 9,51,251 positive cases.

The other worst hit states are Andhra Pradesh (8,89,916), Tamil Nadu (8,51,542), Delhi (6,39,289) and Uttar Pradesh (6,03,527).

In another development, India will expand its coronavirus vaccination programme today to cover people over 60 and those over 45 with comorbidities.

The government hopes to vaccinate 30 crore people by August in this second phase.
