New Delhi (NVI): The Supreme Court today issued a notice to states, seeking their opinion on whether reservation could be allowed beyond 50 per cent.

The Apex Court’s notice to the States came after it was hearing a plea on validity of Maratha reservation. The court said that it has asked the states on the issue as its verdict would have wider ramifications.

The court will now recommence the day-to-day hearing in the matter on March 15.

According to the 102nd amendment to the Constitution, reservation can be granted only if a particular community is named in the list prepared by the President.
