New Delhi (NVI): Justice NV Ramana has been formally appointed as the next Chief Justice of India (CJI) by President Ram Nath Kovind and will take oath on April 24.
CJI SA Bobde, who is due to retire on April 23, had recommended Justice NV Ramana as his successor.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Nuthalapati Venkata Ramana, Judge of the Supreme Court, to be the Chief Justice of India with effect from 24th April, 2021,” an official notification said.
Justice Ramana, who will be the 48th CJI, was appointed to the Supreme Court on February 17, 2014.
He will take over the country’s highest judicial office, in line with the seniority norm followed by Supreme Court in appointing CJIs.
Justice NV Ramana was born in Andhra Pradesh’s Krishna district on August 27, 1957. He will be serving as the country’s CJI for a year and four months, till August 26, 2022.
Justice Bobde was sworn in as the 47th Chief Justice of India in November 2019, succeeding Justice (retired) Ranjan Gogoi.
