New Delhi (NVI): The Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman today met United States Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry and emphasised the need to enhance financial flows to developing countries beyond $100 billion to strengthen climate action.
According to the Finance Ministry, both the leaders acknowledged need for enhanced climate finance, technology transfer and capacity building.
“Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and John Kerry, Special Presidential Envoy for Climate met and discussed various issues related to climate change in New Delhi today. FM Nirmala Sitharmana and John Kerry acknowledged the strong and shared interests between India and US to combat climate change concerns. The need for enhanced climate finance, technology transfer and capacity building was also acknowledged by both sides,” the ministry said.
The ministry said that Sitharaman stressed on the need for assessment of the $100 billion commitment per year from developed countries to developing countries.
“FM underscored the need to enhance financial flows to developing countries beyond $100bn to strengthen climate action,” it said.
Meanwhile she informed Kerry that the country is among few countries on track towards Paris Agreement goals and has taken decisive actions in fighting climate change.
She also emphasised that the focus on climate change should be both on mitigation and on strengthening adaptation measures.
Kerry arrived here yesterday on a four-day India visit to hold consultations on increasing climate ambition, ahead of US President Joe Biden’s ‘Leaders’ Summit on Climate’ on April 22-23, as well as key climate issues in the context of the COP26 meet to be held later this year.
Kerry is traveling to Abu Dhabi, New Delhi, and Dhaka from April 1-9, for consultations on increasing climate ambition, ahead of President Joe Biden’s Leaders’ Summit on Climate (April 22-23) and the 26th Conference of the Parties (COP26) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) later this year, as per the US Embassy.
