New Delhi (NVI): Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip, the longest-serving royal consort in British history, has passed away aged 99, Buckingham Palace said today.
Prince Philip was Queen Elizabeth II’s husband and a leading figure in the British royal family for almost seven decades.
“It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh,” the palace said in a statement.
“His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle. Further announcements will be made in due course. The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss,” the statement read.

Prince Philip had left a London hospital on March 16 after a four-week stay for treatment for an infection and to have a heart procedure.
Flags were lowered to half-mast on royal and government buildings and a notice announcing his death pinned to the gates of Buckingham Palace.
His death came just months before his 100th birthday in June, an event typically marked in Britain with a congratulatory message from the queen, who is now Britain’s longest-serving monarch.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter to offer his condolences and wrote, “My thoughts are with the British people and the Royal Family on the passing away of HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. He had a distinguished career in the military and was at the forefront of many community service initiatives. May his soul rest in peace.”
