Coronavirus cases surpass 134.5 mn globally, death toll tops 2.9 mn

New Delhi (NVI): The global count of coronavirus cases has reached more than 134.5 million, with over 2,914,000 deaths reported. Over 76.4 million patients have been cured of the deadly contagion, according to Johns Hopkins University data.

In the US, the total number of coronavirus infection has reached to more than 31 million, while the total number of COVID-19 fatalities have surpassed 5,61,000 in the country.

Brazil registered 3,693 Covid-19 deaths on Friday and 93,317 additional cases, according to data released by the health ministry.

With this, Brazil’s coronavirus cases have crossed the 13.3 million-mark and stand at 13,373,174 while the number of deaths has surged past 3,48,000.

Furthermore, the number of people in intensive care units with Covid-19 in France increased by 52 to 5,757 on Friday, a nearly five-month high, after dipping on Thursday. The health ministry also reported 301 new deaths in hospitals, compared to 343 on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Greece will limit use of the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine to people above age 30 following rare cases of blood clots, its national vaccinations committee said on Friday, falling into line with other European countries.

Japan will impose tougher coronavirus measures in Tokyo, Okinawa and Kyoto from next week to curb a rise in infections through May 11, weeks before the Olympics begin.
