New Delhi (NVI) The Election Commission of India (ECI) has banned all victory processions on or after counting of votes on May 2 in view of the alarming surge in daily positive cases in the country.

The EC’s decision comes a day after Madras High Court held the election body responsible for Covid resurgence in the country. The court said that EC has failed to exercise its authority to stop political parties from holding huge rallies, risking a number of lives.

The Election Commission, in a statement today said that not more that two persons shall accompany the winning candidate or his/her authorised representative to receive the certificate of election from the Returning Officer concerned.

Assembly elections were scheduled in the five states of West Bengal, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Puducherry in eight phases, beginning March 27 and ending April 29. The counting of votes will take place on May 2.
