New Delhi (NVI): Coastal areas of Gujarat and Diu are bracing for the Cyclone Tauktae which is expected to cause “extremely heavy rainfall” after making landfall anytime now.
According to Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), landfall was expected over the Gujarat coast around Diu between 8 pm and 11 pm with a wind speed of 155-165 kmph.
Rainfall has commenced over coastal areas of Gujarat and Diu. It is very likely to increase from tonight.
The IMD has issued red alert for Gujarat and Diu coasts as very severe cyclonic storm ‘Tauktae’ over eastcentral Arabian Sea intensified into an extremely severe cyclonic storm.
The cyclonic storm “Tauktae” has further intensified into an Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm (ESCS) and about 165 km west-northwest of Mumbai (Maharashtra), and 130 south-southeast of Diu.
“The eye of the storm is likely to cross Gujarat coast between Porbandar and Mahuva, east of Diu tonight, ” the IMD tweeted.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall is continuing over North Konkan including Mumbai. It will continue for next 12 hrs.
Tidal wave above astronomical tide is likely to inundate coastal areas about 3 – 4 meter (m) over Anand & Amreli, Gir Somnath, Diu, Bhavnagar, 2-3 m over Bharuch, southern parts of Ahmedabad, 1-2 m over Surat, Navsari, Valsad, and 0.5 – 1m over the remaining coastal districts of Gujarat during the time of landfall, the IMD said.
