New Delhi: Indian Photo journalist Danish Siddiqui has been killed during an attack by Taliban of Afghan security forces in Spin Boldak district in Kandahar in Afghanistan.
He was working with Reuters and was in Kandahar for coverage of developments there.
He was embedded with Afghan government forces and was killed in Taliban attack.
Condoling his demise, Anurag Thakur, Minister of Information and Broadcasting tweeted, “Danish Siddiqui leaves behind an extraordinary body of work. He won the Pulitzer Prize for Photography and was embedded with the Afghan Forces in Kandahar. Sharing one of his pictures below. Sincere condolences. RIP”
Afghanistan ambassador to India Farid Mamundzay tweeted, “Deeply disturbed by the sad news of the killing of a friend, Danish Seddiqi in Kandahar last night.”
“The Indian Journalist & winner of Pulitzer Prize was embedded with Afghan security forces. I met him 2 weeks ago before his departure to Kabul. Condolences to his family & Reuters,” he said.
Danish Siddiqui had started his career as a television news correspondent and later switched to photojournalism.
He won the Pulitzer Prize in 2018, for his work on the Rohingya refugee crisis along with others on his team.
Fighting has increased immensely in Afghanistan due to surge by Taliban as the US forces are on their way out.
Earlier this week, Indian government had pulled out its personnel from Kandahar Consulate for the time being in view of intense fighting near the city.
