Srinagar: Two terrorists of Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) outfit were killed today in an encounter with security forces in Baramulla district of Kashmir, with the police saying the slain were planning to target the Army recruitment of ‘Agniveers’.

The encounter took place in Yadipora village of Pattan area after a joint security party of the Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police and SSB launched a search operation on the basis of a specific intelligence input about presence of terrorists there.

The terrorists, hiding in a house, opened fire at the security party, which retaliated,  triggering a gunfight, SSP Baramulla Rayees Ahmad Bhat told reporters.

The encounter, that lasted about 8 hours, left two terrorists dead and resulted in the recovery of a large quantity of arms and ammunition, including AK-74 rifle, police said.

Additional Director General of Police (Kashmir) Vijay Kumar said the killed terrorists were locals and affiliated with Jaish-e-Mohammad.

Intelligence input had indicated that the two terrorists were tasked to attack the ongoing Army recruitment rally for ‘Agniveers’ under ‘Agneepath’ scheme in Haiderbeig in Pattan, Bhat said.

“The terrorists intended to disturb the ‘Agniveer’ recruitment rally and disturb the youth who want to be part of the mainstream,” said the SSP, flanked by officers of the Army and SSB.
