Srinagar, Aug 29 (NVI): Rains lashed Jammu and Kashmir today bringing down the day temperatures while as the Meteorological (MeT) department Srinagar has predicted further rains till September 3.
Due to continuous rainfall throughout the day today across the Valley, the maximum temperatures plummeted below normal. Srinagar and other parts of the Valley received light to moderate rains bringing back the winter chill.
Figures available with the NVI suggest that Gulmarg ski resort received the highest precipitation at 21.8mm rainfall followed by Kupwara where 12.4 mm rainfall was recorded till 5:30 pm. “Pahalgam also received heavy rainfall while as per the details; the station recorded a precipitation of 10.1mm during the period. Srinagar, however, recorded a rainfall of 5.0 mm till 05:30 PM,” the MeT department said.
Katra in Jammu division recorded a rainfall of 14.2mm while Jammu station has recorded 12.2 mm during the period.
Director Meteorological department (MeT), Dr Mukhtar Ahmad said weather will remain erratic till September 3. “There is a possibility of a spell of rain and thundershower at scattered places on August 30. From August 31, to September 01, the weather would remain generally dry with brief spell of rain and thundershower at isolated places,” he said.
Adding that on September 02 & 03, the weather would remain generally cloudy with the possibility of spell of light to moderate rain and thundershower showers at many places. He warned of flashfloods and landslides in the vulnerable areas and urged people to take precautions. “People living on the banks of river Jehlum and low lying areas need to be vigilant,” he said.
