Jammu, Sep 9 (NVI) Two foreign terrorists, suspected to be Pakistanis, were killed today near the Line of Control (LoC) by the Indian Army, with the assistance of Jammu and Kashmir Police, thus preventing them from sneaking into the Union Territory and foiling their possible evil designs to disrupt ongoing electioneering.

The terrorists’ infiltration bid was foiled in Lam area of Nowshera sector of Jammu, Defence spokesperson Lt Colonel Sunil Baratwal said in a statement.

He said there were intelligence inputs since August 30 indicating presence of terrorists opposite Nowshera Sector.

In view of this, all likely infiltration routes were kept under surveillance and ground-based and aerial surveillance assets were employed to monitor the area.

“Area domination patrols were also conducted with greater frequency, deploying troops at key terrain locations to prevent terrorist infiltration,” the Jammu-based spokesman said.

Last night, at approximately 7:30 pm, surveillance teams detected suspicious movement of few individuals in the area and they were challenged.

“An Intense firefight ensued. The exchange of fire continued through the night. UAVs, night cameras, and other surveillance equipment were deployed to keep the terrorists under observation, ” the spokesman said.

The firefight resulted in the killing of two terrorists, Baratwal said.

They slain terrorists appeared to be foreigners but their actual identity and affilitation were not known yet.

The terrorists were trying to enter Jammu and Kashmir from Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir with the possible motive of disrupting the ongoing Assembly elections here.

Baratwal said searches were carried out this morning after dawn to clear the area of any remaining threats.

A significant cache of war-like stores, including two AK-47 rifles, one M-4 rifle with sight and one pistol was recovered, the defence spokesman said.

He said the Indian Army’s swift and coordinated response to this infiltration attempt highlights the synergy between the Army, JK Police and the intelligence agencies.

“The Indian Army remains alert and committed to defeat any such attempt in future, ” he said. (NVI)
