Encounter breaks out in Reasi district of Jammu

Srinagar, Sept 20 (NVI): A gunfight has started between a group of terrorists and security forces in Chassana area of Reasi district in Jammu region, officials said tonight.

They said acting on a specific tip-off, a cordon and search operation was launched in the area.

“As soon the troops zeroed in on the suspected spot, the hiding militants opened fire triggering off a gunfight,” the officials told NVI.

District Police Reasi posted on X that, “On the receipt of specific intel, an operation was launched around 1300 hrs today. Contact has been established at the Shikari area of Police Station Chassana.”

A defence source said that the exchange of fire is on between militants and security forces.

“Two to three militants are believed to be trapped in the area,” they said, adding the troops are following Standard Operating Procedure (SoP) in spirit in view of darkness to avoid any collateral damage.

It may be noted that as part of 3-phased Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, Reasi district will have polling on September 25, which is the second phase. (NVI)
