Two dead as avalanche hits army patrol party in Siachen Glacier

Srinagar (NVI): Two Army personnel of a patrol party died, as an avalanche hit them at the Southern Siachen Glacier during the early hours today, official said.

The patrol party operating at an altitude of approximately 18,000 ft, were immediately located by the Avalanche Rescue Team (ART) and pulled out and evacuated with the help of Army helicopters.

However, despite best efforts by the medical teams, two of them succumb to their injuries, officials added.

The tragedy comes close on the heels of a similar avalanche, that hit an eight-member patrol party and claimed six lives in Northern Sector of Siachen Glacier on November 18.
