Srinagar, Jan 28 (NVI):In a significant statement on ongoing national debates, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah underscored the ultimate role of Parliament in deciding contentious issues like the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and the proposed Waqf (Amendment) Bill.
Speaking to reporters in Delhi, Abdullah addressed the recent developments in Uttarakhand and the deliberations over the Waqf Bill, emphasising the importance of democratic processes.
On Uttarakhand’s move to implement the UCC, Abdullah remained composed. “Let them do it. They may do what they want. The final decision will be made in Parliament,” he remarked, reiterating that such matters require consensus and national debate before implementation. His statement came amidst growing discussions about the implications of a UCC on India’s pluralistic society.
Regarding the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, Omar Abdullah clarified that no legislation has been finalized yet. “The bill is currently under review by a parliamentary committee, and discussions are underway,” he explained. Abdullah noted that stakeholders, including Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, have presented their views to the committee, urging patience as the process unfolds. “Let the committee do its work, and after that, there will be a debate in Parliament,” he added.
