Srinagar, Mar 3 (NVI): The Srinagar Police on Tuesday said it has taken strong notice of the circulation of false and misleading information by certain news channels, media outlets and individuals on electronic and social media platforms, aimed at disturbing public order and creating disharmony in society.
In a statement issued to the news agency NVI, police said that such elements are deliberately spreading distorted narratives and unverified content with the intention of inciting unrest and destabilising peace in the region.
Calling the misinformation campaign a serious threat to peace, security and the integrity of the nation, police said an FIR (No. 01/2026) has been registered at the Cyber Police Station Srinagar under relevant sections of law.
Police said several social media profiles involved in spreading fake and inflammatory content have been identified and the concerned individuals have been summoned for questioning.
“Investigation is underway and strict legal action will be taken against anyone found involved in spreading false and provocative material,” the statement said.
The Srinagar Police warned that sharing fake news, unverified or inflammatory content will invite stringent legal consequences.
Police also advised citizens and media organisations to act responsibly and verify facts only from official and credible sources before sharing any content that could disturb communal harmony or public order.
Srinagar Police reiterated its commitment to maintaining law and order and said it will not allow any attempt to disrupt peace in the region.—(NVI)
