Srinagar (NVI): An army jawan committed suicide by shooting himself dead with his service riffle at Chatergul Army camp in Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district, officials said.

An official said that a soldier Jagmeet Singh son of Makhan Singh, a resident of Haryana service ID number 15514259, who was posted with the 24 RR Delta Company-D. They said that the soldier took the extreme step in the morning.

A police officer further said that a case has been registered in police station Kangan while the Army has ordered an in house inquiry to find out what forced the soldier to take the extreme step.

Pertinently, today’s incident is the second since October 2, when a solider posted in Uri area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla shoot himself dead . A security expert said that the primary reason for rising attempts of suicides among the security forces is non-availability of leave and stigma triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Even though security forces are being given regular counselling lessons in their respective units to do away with the mental stress triggered by long duty hours and COVID-19 pandemic, some incidents are still taking place. One of the primary reason is that family issues are perturbing security forces personnel deployed in Kashmir,” he added.
