BJP councillor, SPO killed in terrorist attack in J&K’s Sopore

New Delhi (NVI): A BJP councillor and a Special Police Officer (SPO) were killed in a terror attack today carried out by two terrorists near Lone Building in Sopore area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, police said.

Senior Superintendent of Police, Sopore, Sudhanshu Verma said that two militants were behind the attack. They opened fire outside the building where BJP State Secretary and BDC Chairperson Fareeda Khan were meeting the councillors.

The BJP councillor, identified as Riyaz Ahmad Peer and his PSO Shafqat Ahmad were killed while one councilor Shamas Din Peer of Khushal Colony, Sopore was injured.

Riyaz Ahmad Peer and his PSO Shafqat Ahmad were declared brought dead by doctor and the injured were rushed to Srinagar hospital, officials said, adding that Fareeda Khan is safe.

Talking with media on the sidelines of wreath laying ceremony at district police line Sopore, the SSP said that searches are on to nab the two attackers.

The officer said so far it was not known which terror  outfit was behind the attack, however, investigation has been started.

Meanwhile, the whole area has been cordoned off and operation is underway to nab the attackers.

Kashmir Zone Police also tweeted on the attack saying a police personnel and a councillor lost their lives.

“Terrorists fired at Municipal Office Sopore. In this terror incident, police personnel Shafqat Ahmad & councilor Riyaz Ahmad got martyred & councilor Shams-ud-din Peer got injured. Injured shifted to hospital for treatment. Area cordoned off & further details shall follow,” Kashmir Zone Police tweeted.
