New Delhi (NVI): The BJP is set to retain power in six municipal corporations in Gujarat, as the counting of votes for elections held on 575 seats across Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot, Bhavnagar and Jamnagar is underway amid strict Covid-19 protocols.

As per the latest trends, BJP is winning 451 of the total 575 seats while Congress has won 44 of the declared seats so far.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also tweeted on BJP’s win in the elections.

“Today’s win across Gujarat is very special. For a party that is serving in a state for over two decades to record such a phenomenal win is noteworthy. It is heartening to see widespread support from all sections of society, particularly the youth of Gujarat towards BJP,” PM Modi said in a series of tweets.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which had fielded 470 candidates across the six corporations, has also put up an impressive show by winning 19 seats so far.

Pertinent to mention here that all these municipal bodies are currently governed by the BJP. These civic body polls are crucial, with Gujarat Assembly elections due next year.

For the 576 seats in 144 wards across 6 civic bodies, average voter turnout of around 46.08 per cent was recorded.

Earlier, expressing happiness over BJP’s victory, Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani said in a series of tweets: “By giving a grand victory, Gujarat has once again proved that Gujarat is the stronghold of the Bharatiya Janata Party.”

“The grand victory of the Bharatiya Janata Party in the elections of 6 Municipal Corporations is the victory of the people of Gujarat,” Rupani tweeted in Gujarati.

Meanwhile, the Gujarat BJP announced a public function to celebrate its victory in the municipal corporation elections at its Ahmedabad party office in the evening.

CM Vijay Rupani, Deputy CM Nitin Patel and Gujarat BJP party chief C R Patil will be present at the event.
