Srinagar, Dec 17 (NVI): In a determined effort to combat illegal mining activities, J&K Police in Budgam district have seized a total of 33 vehicles, including 14 tractors, 18 tippers, and one LNT (Loader and Tipper), involved in the unlawful extraction and transportation of minerals in the district.
The crackdown, which spanned over the months of November and December 2024, also led to the arrest of nine individuals who were found to be directly involved in these illegal operations.
The police have registered six First Information Reports (FIRs) at different police stations in the district, namely Magam, Beerwah and Khansahib, as part of their ongoing efforts to address the illegal mining menace. These vehicles were being used to illegally transport minerals, contributing to the degradation of local resources and posing environmental hazards.
The authorities have emphasized that this drive is part of a broader initiative to curb illegal mining activities, which have been increasing in recent months. In addition to the seizure of vehicles and arrests, the police have also imposed fines totaling lakhs of rupees on those involved in the illegal extraction and transportation of minerals. The fines are aimed at deterring violators and sending a strong message that illegal mining will not be tolerated in the district.
The crackdown is being carried out in close collaboration with the Mineral Department of Budgam, ensuring that all illegal activities are swiftly identified and dealt with. The authorities are determined to maintain strict enforcement and hold violators accountable for their actions.
Budgam Police have called on local communities to play an active role in reporting any illegal mining activities they witness in their neighborhoods. “We urge the public to come forward with any information regarding illegal mining. Community participation is crucial in our efforts to protect the environment and natural resources from exploitation,” a police spokesperson said.
This proactive approach underscores the commitment of Budgam Police to take stern action against those who flout mining laws, disrupt the environment, and harm public welfare. With the drive continuing through December, authorities are hopeful that such actions will serve as a deterrent and curb the growing problem of illegal mining in the area.(News Vibes of India)
