New Delhi, Mar 9 (NVI): The second phase of Parliament’s Budget Session is set to resume on Monday and is expected to begin on a stormy note, with the opposition planning to move a resolution seeking the removal of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.
According to details available with news Vibes of India (NVI), opposition parties have accused Birla of acting in a partisan manner during the conduct of House proceedings and have submitted a notice seeking his removal. The motion is listed in the Lok Sabha’s business for discussion.
Apart from the resolution against the Speaker, several other issues are expected to dominate the proceedings, including the evolving situation in West Asia and India’s position on the developments involving Iran and the United States, besides concerns over rising crude oil prices triggered by the regional tensions.
Opposition parties are also likely to raise the issue of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in poll-bound West Bengal, where deletion of a large number of voters has sparked a political debate.
Meanwhile, the government is expected to push key legislative business during the remaining part of the Budget Session, including the proposed Electricity Amendment Bill and other pending matters from the first phase of the session.
Both the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and the opposition Indian National Congress have issued whips to their Members of Parliament to remain present in the House during the discussion on the resolution. However, with the ruling alliance enjoying a numerical advantage, the motion is unlikely to succeed.
The Lok Sabha is also expected to pay tributes to Shillong MP Ricky Syngkon, who passed away last month.(NVI)
