Coronavirus cases exceed 8 million worldwide

New Delhi (NVI): The total number of coronavirus cases has now exceeded 8 million around the world. More than 3.8 million people have recovered, while at least 4,35,662 have died, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.

In the US, nearly 2.1 million Covid-19 cases have been recorded including at least 1,16,000 deaths.

In Brazil, a total of 8,88,271 cases of coronavirus have been reported while the death toll is nearing 44,000 in the country.

In Mexico,tThere are now a total 150,264 confirmed coronavirus cases and 17,580 deaths, though the government has said the real number of infected people is likely significantly higher than the official count.

New Zealand recorded two new cases of Covid-19, their first cases in weeks. The two women, who are related, had travelled from the UK and were released from government quarantine and allowed to drive 650km from Auckland to Wellington on compassionate grounds.

South Korea also reported 34 new coronavirus cases. It’s the third day in a row its new infections tally has been below 40.

Thailand reported no new coronavirus infections or deaths and marked 22 successive days without a domestic transmission.

In addition to this, in China, Beijing is reintroducing strict lockdown measures and rolling out mass testing to beat back a fresh cluster of cases.

Meanwhile, WHO head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreysus has warned countries need to “stay alert to the possibility of resurgence” as new clusters of cases emerge in Beijing and more than 100,000 cases of coronavirus are reported across the world every day.
