Coronavirus cases exceeds 112.5 mn globally, death toll nears 2.5 mn

New Delhi (NVI): More than 112.5 million people around the world have been confirmed to have the coronavirus, while the death toll has crossed 2,497,000, according to the Johns Hopkins University tally. Over 63.4 million patients have recovered from the deadly disease globally.

The number of coronavirus infections in the US have surpassed 28.3 million, while the number of fatalities caused due to the deadly contagion have surpassed 5,05,000 in the country.

Brazil’s coronavirus cases have crossed the 10.3 million-mark and stands at 10,324,463 while the number of deaths have surged past 2,49,500.

Meanwhile, Victoria, Australia’s second-most populous state, recorded no cases for nearly a week, suggesting the most recent outbreak in Melbourne has been contained, prompting authorities to flag easing of more restrictions soon.

Singapore received its first batch of the Covid vaccine made by China’s Sinovac Biotech on Tuesday, its health ministry said, although the shot is still awaiting approval for use in the city-state.

Mainland China reported 7 new Covid cases on February 24, down from 12 cases a day earlier. The total number of confirmed cases in mainland China now stands at 89,871, while the death toll remained unchanged at 4,636.

Furthermore, Canada’s largest city Toronto is cancelling all large in-person, city-permitted outdoor events through July as the country seeks to stave off a third wave of the coronavirus pandemic.

Switzerland is to start easing out of its lockdown from March 1, the government has said, confirming preliminary plans to open shops, museums and libraries and allow outdoor gatherings of up to 15 people.
