Coronavirus cases surge past 18.7 million worldwide

New Delhi (NVI): More than 18.7 million people around the world have been diagnosed with the new coronavirus, while the global death toll surpassed 704,000 people. More than 11.2 million have recovered, according to Johns Hopkins University.

The US reported 1,262 more COVID-19 fatalities in the last 24 hours and added 53,158 new infections taking the total number of fatalities to 1,57,930 and caseload past 4.8 million.

In Brail, the total number of cases hve surpassed 2.8 million while the total number of deaths are nearing 1 lakh in the country.

In addition to this, Brazil’s top court ordered President Jair Bolsonaro to draw up a plan within 30 days to reduce COVID-19’s threat to the country’s Indigenous people.

Spain reported 1,772 new coronavirus infections, marking the biggest jump since a national lockdown was lifted in June and beating the previous day’s record rise.

Hideaki Ohmura, the governor of Japan’s Aichi Prefecture, announced a regional “state of emergency”, urging people to stay home at night and businesses to close altogether or close early to curb the coronavirus.

Victorian state of Australia has announced 471 new coronavirus cases along with 8 new deaths.
