Coronavirus cases surge past 83.9 million mark worldwide

New Delhi (NVI): The global count of coronavirus cases has reached more than 83.9 million, with over 18,27,000 deaths reported. Over 47 million patients have been cured and recovered from the deadly contagion, according to Johns Hopkins University data.

In the US, the total number of coronavirus infections have crossed 20 million, while the number of fatalities due to the virus have surpassed 3,47,700 in the country with 3,900 new deaths.

Brazil’s coronavirus cases has surpassed 7.7 million, while the country accounts for the second highest number of COVID-19 fatalities at 1,95,411.

The Chinese mainland recorded 22 new COVID-19 cases on Friday, of which eight were locally transmitted and 14 from overseas. The overall tally reached to 96,000
and the death toll stands at 4,634 with no COVID-19 deaths registered in the smae period.

France’s health ministry also reported 19,348 new coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours. With this, the country’s tally has reached 2.6 million — the fifth highest in the world with over 64,800 deaths.

Meanwhile, South Korea will extend unequalled social distancing rules in Seoul and neighboring areas until January 17, Health Minister Kwon Deok-cheol said, including a ban on gatherings with more than four people.
