Coronavirus cases surge past 39.8 mn globally; death toll tops 1.1 mn

New Delhi (NVI): More than 39.8 million people have been infected by coronavirus worldwide, with over 11,12,500 deaths reported, according to Johns Hopkins University tally.

At least 27.4 million patients have been cured and recovered from the deadly contagion globally.

In the US, the total number of coronavirus cases have reached more than 8.15 million while the total number of fatalities have surpassed 2,19,669 in the country.

Brazil, remains number one COVID-19 affected country in Latin America, registered 10,982 cases within past 24 hours and surpassed 5.22 million. The country’s death toll stands at 1,53,675.

Russia registered a record figure of 29,837 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours. The country has a total of 13,90,824 confirmed coronavirus cases, while the COVID-19 death toll stands at 24,039.

Thailand also reported five imported coronavirus cases, which took the nation’s total infections to 3,691. All the new cases were found in state quarantine, as per the reports.

Moreover, Ireland is set to introduce some of the toughest curbs in Europe in a renewed effort to curtail the spread of the coronavirus.

The mainland China reported 13 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday, unchanged from the previous day. The country had 85,685 confirmed coronavirus cases, while the COVID-19 death toll stands at 4,634, the health authority said.

Apart from this, the government of Italy announced a new raft of measures to tighten restrictions amid a surge in COVID-19 cases. As the country reported a record figure of 11,705 new coronavirus cases over the past 24 hours, taking the tally to 4,14,000.
