Covid-19 tally in India rise to 27.6 lakh; death toll at 52,889

New Delhi (NVI): The coronavirus cases in India saw the single-day jump of 64,531 in the last 24 hours, taking the total number to 27,67,273, Union Health Ministry said.

The country’s death toll has gone up to 52,889 with 1,092 fresh fatalities being reported during this period.

So far, 20,37,870 patients have recovered all over the country. With this, the recovery rate improved further to 74 per cent in India.

Maharashtra, with, 6,15,477 positive cases, remains the worst affected state in the country, followed by Tamil Nadu (3,49,654), Andhra Pradesh (3,06,261) and Delhi (1,54,741).

The other states with high virus cases are Karnataka (2,40,948), Uttar Pradesh (1,62,434), West Bengal (1,22,753) and Gujarat (80,802).

In terms of fatalities, Maharashtra again tops the tally with 20,687 deaths, ministry said.

The death toll in the national capital surged to 4,226 while another 1,39,447 patients have recovered so far, healthy ministry data shows.

According to Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), as on August 18, the cumulative number of 3,17,42,782 samples have been tested so far and 8,01,518 samples were tested yesterday.

Meanwhile, NITI Aayog member VK Paul yesterday said that India would have to wait for a few weeks for the results of Phase 1 and 2 clinical trials of two indigenous COVID-19 vaccines.
