COVID cases in India climb to over 80.8 lakh; death toll mounts to 1.21 lakh

New Delhi (NVI): The coronavirus cases in India saw a jump of 48,648 in the last 24 hours, raising the total number to 80,88,851, Union Health Ministry said.

The country’s death toll due to the virus rose to 1,21,090, with 563 new fatalities being reported in the past 24 hours.

So far, 73,73,375 patients have been cured an recovered all over the country and the active cases stands at 5,94,386.

This is for the first time when active COVID-19 cases in the country fell below the 6 lakh mark.

In worst-hit Maharashtra, the COVID-19 cases increased to 16,66,668, followed by Andhra Pradesh with 8,17,679 cases, and Karnataka with 8,16,809 cases.

Maharashtra has also reported the highest number of fatalities at 43,710, followed by 11,091 in Karnataka and 11,053 in Tamil Nadu.

The other worst affected states are Tamil Nadu (7,19,403) Uttar Pradesh (4,77,895), Kerala (4,18,485) and Delhi (3,75,753).

The death toll in the national capital rose to 6,423, while 3,38,378 patients in Delhi have recovered so far, the healthy ministry data shows.

As per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) data, a total 10,77,28,088 samples tested for COVID-19 up to October 29. Of these 11,64,648 samples were tested yesterday.

Meanwhile, the Health Ministry said, India has exponentially scaled up its COVID-19 testing capacity from one in January to more than 10.65 crore at present. The very high testing has resulted in the continuously falling positivity rate.
