Earthquake of magnitude 7.2 rocks northeast Japan, tsunami alert lifted

New Delhi (NVI): An earthquake of magnitude 7.2 struck off the coast of the Miyagi region in Japan.

Tremors were also felt in the capital, Tokyo.

Soon after the strong quake, authorities issued a 1-meter high Tsunami warning but it has now been lifted.

After the warning was lifted, municipalities ended the evacuation measures which were put in place after thousands of households received evacuation warnings over the tsunami alert.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) said the quake was centered 34 kilometers (21 miles) east of Ishinomaki at a depth of 60 kilometers (37 miles).

At least 200 households were left without electricity.

However, there was no immediate information of damage or casualties, according to media reports.
