Srinagar (NVI): An unidentified terrorist was killed and another surrendered in a gunfight that broke out with the security forces in Noorpora area of Awantipora belt of south Kashmir’s Pulwama district this evening, officials said.

Srinagar-based Defence Spokesman, Col Rajesh Kalia, said one terrorist was killed and another surrendered during the encounter. “One terrorist eliminated. Second terrorist responded to surrender appeal and apprehended. One AK-47 recovered from the encounter site,” he said.

A joint team of Police, Army’s 42 RR and CRPF launched a cordon and search operation based on specific information about the presence of terrorists in the area, an official said.

“As the joint team of forces approached towards the suspected spot, the hiding terrorists fired upon them, which was retaliated, triggering an encounter,” he said.

“Due to the dark, lights have been installed and cordon layers tightened to ensure that terrorists don’t flee,” he added.

Meanwhile, IGP Kashmir, Vijay Kumar said, “It was after hectic persuasion that the second terrorist agreed to surrender.”
